A wake boat is a large, sturdy V-drive or direct-drive motorboat that’s capable of towing wakeboarders, wakesurfers and water skiers alike. To build the wakes necessary for these sports, wake boats have stern-facing inboard engines that churn up water behind the craft. The careful use of ballast and other features change the size and shape of these wakes. For wakeboarders in particular, the generation of consistent wakes is vital as it allows them to do tricks and land their jumps correctly without falling into the water.One essential component of wakeboard boats is cruise control, which allows the operator to get the boat up to the correct speed and maintain it consistently. This is important because whether you’re on board, surf or ski, you need a constant speed to maintain your balance on your equipment and on the water.
Features
To assist in the creation of wakes, these vessels have a number of unique features you probably won’t see on other boats because they aren’t necessary to their function. Other features can be installed by the owner aftermarket to assist with this process. The three primary features are hydrofoil devices, hull shaping and ballast.

Finally, the hulls of these vessels are shaped with special technology in order to increase wake size. The rudder propeller, fins and general shape of the hull contribute to the process of wake generation. These features do make the craft particularly unsuited to shallow water or water that has a lot of obstacles in it, so you won’t be able to cruise near riverbanks or lakeshores.
